houston review: razzoo’s cajun cafe

The story of razzoo’s

Cajun food plays a big role in the food scene of Texas, but here at HMHS, we haven’t really been able to experience much Cajun food, let alone good Cajun food. This changed when Razzoo’s Cajun Cafe contacted us to try their top menu items. And o my, was it a very pleasant experience with tasty and fun dishes.

We’ll start off with a quick backstory: Razzoo’s was founded in Dallas in 1991. Since then, it’s expanded across Texas and the South, and now, there are over 22 locations! Razzoo’s Cajun Cafe has been known to create novel and bold Cajun-inspired dishes that bring to life the flavor, fun and festivity of New Orleans and the French Quarter. Some of their dishes that hit the Cajun craving include their Fried Gator, Cajun Fondue (this one in particular was amazeballs), Jambalaya pasta and more! But enough chitchat, let’s get to our review!

We ordered takeout over in Stafford, and when we walked in, we were immediately greeted by extremely friendly and open staffers! Our order was on time, and everyone we talked to was so nice, and despite social distancing within the (quite spacious) restaurant, the festive flair was definitely still there.

appetizer (cajun fondue)

Our meal started off with the Cajun Fondue, and heck. What a way to start a meal. Plenty of savory crawfish in a creamy cheese sauce, paired with buttery garlic toast: think queso but with crawfish and garlic toast as your chip. Yeah, it really doesn’t get better than that. And don’t fret if crawfish isn’t your thing, because you can either have shrimp or chicken Cajun fondue instead!

Entrees (stuffed shrimp & Seafood platter)

For our entrees, we had the stuffed shrimp, as well as the seafood platter. The stuffed shrimp consisted of a plentiful amount of shrimp & crab stuffing atop creamy rice, with a portion of garlic bread and beans on the side. This was a personal favorite, as the soft and savory crab stuffing perfectly complemented the shrimp; the two were definitely distinct, but paired together so well. The creamy rice provided a new and fresh background for all the fried food, so it was a fun welcome without being terribly heavily.

The seafood platter had shrimp, catfish, crawfish, hushpuppies and corn, with three different dipping sauces (a fun, lemony tartar, the usual cocktail and a cranberry sauce). The platter has a beautiful variety to it; from the little crawfish to the big chunks of shrimp and nice pieces of catfish, it all looked so appetizing. While the looks were there, you must be wondering about the taste, right? Well, I can say substance does indeed match style and even exceeds it. Nothing was overly encased with fried batter, allowing for a palatable contrast between the flesh and batter. Moreover, the variety of sauces added and brought out different subtle flavors in each seafood, letting us never tire from the diversity of taste. The seafood platter was just an overall flavorsome dish.

Dessert (bread pudding)

To finish the meal, we had a heaping portion of the bread pudding with dark rum sauce. Yeah, if that sounds like heaven to you, well, it definitely tasted just as good. The dessert wasn’t sickeningly sweet, but just the right amount and nice and warm. Topped with the rum sauce, there really was no better way to finish off the meal. Best way to describe this dessert – satisfying bliss.

Final Thoughts

We greatly enjoyed the Razzoo’s experience – it’s a good place with welcoming staff and tasty food that hits that Cajun spot, especially for those deprived of Cajun food like us. From appetizers to dessert, Razzoo’s does an all-around good job, satisfying our eyes and stomach so much. We definitely recommend trying Razzoo’s for anyone who wants that good Cajun cusinine. On top of that, it’s a pretty causal sit-down place, so you can go anytime with anyone! Right now, they’re offering delivery, take-out or dine-in options. So go on and visit a Razzoo’s Cajun Cafe near you and let us know how it was!
