Salty Sow has quickly become one of our favorite happy hour locations. As they advertise themselves, Salty Sow is an American Gastropub that serves contemporary farmhouse fare located fairly near campus on Manor Road.
We first heard about Salty Sow as it’s ranked pretty high here on Yelp with good prices, and so we stopped by to avoid going somewhere terribly crowded. We walked in without a reservation and were seated pretty quickly (looks small but lots of seating available!) Since we came for happy hour, we ordered the truffled deviled eggs with bacon eggs and crispy brussels sprouts leaves.
I never thought I was a big brussels sprouts person, but our server Jeff recommended it paired with the slow cooked beef shoulder on yukon gold mashed potatoes. Holy heck, the crispyness and sweetness paired wonderfully with the buttery mashed potatoes — a mouthful of wonderful flavors.
Recently, they have a chicken and biscuits with hot honey (I believe this item is made by the same people who run Tumble 22, another chicken stop that I have yet to go to). For someone who loves chicken (see our Bird Bird Biscuits review), we have high expectations — and we were not let down at all. Everything — I mean, EVERYTHING, from the subtly sweet honey to warm buttery biscuits to crispy but tender chicken — was amazing.
Between all our other visits (we’ve now been here a number of times), we’ve had the salmon rillette (creamy spread on toast), eggplant fries (tastes even better than regular potato fries), their pork belly and cauliflower rice casserole. But make sure you leave for dessert, because whether you opt for their nutmeg ice cream, butterscotch budino (our personal favorite — topped with salted caramel and sweet creme fraiche), bread pudding or creme brulee, you’re sure to find something to perfectly wrap up your dinner here. And you can bet we’ll be back ourselves! š
