When’s the last time you’ve had a fantastical sushi dinner? If it’s been a while, and you’re willing to ~indulge, then do we have a spot for you 😉.
Behold, Kata Robata! While it may seem like a mildly unassuming spot in Upper Kirby, it does pack a punch ✊. Kata Robata not only offers some excellent sushi, but they also have other phenomenal dishes if you wanna try something outside of sushi. Our recommendation is to have the best of both worlds 😉.
Now let’s get to why we might greatly enjoy Kata’s sushi.
The sheer enormity of their pieces may be unmatched. Other good sushi spots do sushi well obviously, but oftentimes, the pieces are less-than-plump (i.e., compact). And don’t get us wrong, we like all sushi to be honest 😂. However, sometimes you just want cosmic-sized sushi. That’s what Kata offers, in our opinion; each piece is a healthy size and you can take two (or even three) bites for each piece! They’re also exquisite pieces; you won’t be disappointed by their flavor.
Some pieces we enjoy specifically are the Akamutsu, Otoro, Uni, Kinmedai, Kanpachi, Buri, and Kohada. Let’s be honest though, we virtually fancy all their sushi 🤡, and they’re all good to be fair. I must, nevertheless, add that Annie indubitably ADORES their foie gras; I’m not sure what it is, but the foie gras sushi is what’s miles ahead of everything else for her 😮💨. We personally recommend getting the Sushi Platter – it’s 10 pieces of the Chief’s choosing of delicious nigiri with a salmon or tuna roll. You’ll get some topnotch nigiri and won’t regret it :).
For rolls, the Toro and Ikura is one of our favorites. It’s got this wonderful contrast in texture between crunchy and soft, and it merely contains bursts of flavor 🤘. The Caribbean Roll is also nice; it boasts a fruity twist with some savory fried lobster; you can’t go wrong with it. A personal favorite of mine is the Spider Roll. I don’t know what it is, but the flavor profile of soft shell crab is irresistible 😂; the decadent frying of crab is always an intriguing combo in my book.
Now for the non-sushi items. You MUST get the Wagyu Katsu Sando; it was the first time Annie and I had to order the same item multiple times to grasp its brilliance. Nestled between two pieces of Japanese milk bread lies premium, crisp Texas Wagyu beef; on top of that, it’s glazed with some tangy, savory Katsu Sauce. It’s simply magnificent; the beef is arguably softer than the bread and it just melts in your mouth. Trust us, once you try it, you’ll wanna get more and more. It’s so good 🤤.
And it doesn’t end there, folks. There’s plenty of other non-sushi options, such as the Hamachi Kama (i.e., yellowtail collar), Pan Seared Scallop, and of course, their ramen 😮💨. There are nearly endless options you could enjoy, but we’ve detailed some of our favorites :).
For dessert, we recommend either their or Green Tea Soufflé Cheesecake. The Strawberry Tres Leches is excellent; with a combo like strawberry, condensed milk and coconut milk, you know you’re going to enjoy it 😤. Now what might take the cake (🤣) for us is the Green Tea Soufflé Cheesecake. It definitely has a unique perspective on dessert flavor profiles that is influenced by both East and West, and this flavor profile is not only approved of but also highly recommended! Moreover, there’s red bean ice cream, chestnut cream and kuromame; what’s not to love in this dessert?
